Summer Showcase Match Results and Information!

Today, Monday, June 30, the first cycle of the US Soccer National Development Academy came to a close for California Odyssey. The teams were fortunate to get drawn against the US National Teams and both teams came away with tough losses. The 91 Boys played very well in the first half, possessing the ball for the majority of the half, but found themselves down 1-2, with the goal coming from a great shot from Scott Binford that tied the score at 1 in the 24th minute. About 15 minutes into the 2nd half, the National Team scored to make it 1-3 and unfortunately, by the end of the match, the final score was 1-6. The team finished with an overall record of 10-13-7, which was good enough for 4th place in the West Conference.

In the second match, the 89 Boys played one of their best matches of the cycle and were up 2-0 on the National Team at half-time. Great goals by Jesus Santiago and Jose Cuevas put the team ahead in the first 22 minutes. The National Team fought back in the second half and got 3 goals to win the match 2-3. Just like with the 91s, fatigue caught up with the team a bit in the 2nd half and the National Team scored the game winner with 4 minutes left. The team had an incredible performance and received many compliments following the match. Although the team finished the cycle with an overall record of 8-18-4, good for 6th place in the West Conference, the team again proved they can compete with anyone in the country. It was a very solid way to end this first Academy cycle.

Congrats to both teams for their performances over the last 6 months and good luck to all of the players in the future! The next cycle of matches kicks-off in September, with try-outs coming up on Saturday, July 26 and Sunday, July 27. Times and locations will be announced during the week of July 7. Stay tuned for more information. GO ODYSSEY!!

On Sunday, June 29, the 1991 Odyssey Academy team tied Carmel United (Indiana) 2-2. It was an intense match from the opening whistle as Carmel United could have clinched the Great Lakes Conference title with a win. However, Odyssey was on a mission to not let that happen at their expense and scored 27 minutes into the match on a great shot by Ivan Yanez. Nic Cardenas played a great ball to Yanez who calmly finished it to the far post. Carmel fought back and tied the match about 10 minutes later but Elliott Hord found the back of the net on a free kick in the last minute of the first half. Carmel came out to start the second half on fire and found the tying goal 15 minutes into the second half. Both teams had chances throughout the remainder of the match to find the winner but in the end, 2-2 remained the scoreline. Our teams record now stands at 10-12-7.

On Saturday, June 28, the 1989 Odyssey Academy team tied Carmel United (Indiana) 3-3. The team played well and got off to a great start when Jesus Santiago crushed a volley off the inside of the far post and into the back of the net. The lead was temporary as Carmel scored two goals before half-time to take the lead. Jose Cuevas evened the score 15 minutes into the second half for Odyssey with a great individual effort but Carmel took the lead back 10 minutes later. A great run by Victor Gutierrez late in the match led to a penalty kick that Cuevas finished for the final result.  Our teams record now stands at 8-17-4.

On Friday, June 27, the 1989 Odyssey Academy team lost to Baltimore Bays 1-4. Paul Islas scored the teams lone goal early in the second half to trim the deficit to two goals. A late goal by the Bays finished out the scoring. The Bays had already locked up the Mid-Atlantic Conference Championship and will be competing at the National Final. Our teams record now stands at 8-17-3. Later in the day, the 1991 Odyssey Academy team tied Baltimore Bays 2-2. The team went up very early in the match on a goal by Robert Garcia but found themselves down 1-2 after a Bays goal early in the second half. Elliott Hord scored the equalizer with 10 minutes left to earn the point for the team. Our teams record now stands at 10-12-6.

Odyssey Player Continues Success with U.S. Soccer!
Jun 05 2008 -
Congratulations to Odyssey player Jon-Paul Medina for his most recent success!

JP returned from Madrid, Spain in mid-May after a 10 day trip with the U-15 Boys US National Team. The team played against Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, and two local Madrid teams while on the trip. The team suffered a tough 0-4 result against Real Madrid, but responded with a convincing 3-0 result against Athletico Madrid. Against the two local teams, the U-15s won 2-0 and tied 0-0. JP enjoyed the trip immensely and thought, overall, it was a great experience. "The soccer was amazing. The technical ability of all of the players, especially Real and Atletico, was incredible. The speed of the matches was so quick and it forced us to play so fast and limit our touches, no more than two most of the time." JP found himself at holding midfield for three of the matches and at left back for one. He said that they were able to sightsee a bit and that "the buildings were old, but the shops were all new and modern."

Based on his performance in Spain, JP has been invited to the next U-15 National Team camp. The dates of the camp are June 14 - 24 and will be held in St. Louis, Missouri. Also, JP has been invited to the prestigious ESP Camp being held in Colorado from July 3 - 8. Congratulations to JP for all he has done so far and the Club would like to wish him nothing but the best. Good Luck! GO ODYSSEY!!
