38 players from the 5 USSF Academy teams (De Anza, Cal Odyssey, Mustang, Santa Cruz and CDA) were chosen based on their play during the first half of the Academy season as scouted by USSF National coaches and evaluators to participate in this Select day camp. Coach Perez along with his MTC coaching staff of Mario Mora (USSF National Scout), Eric Yamamoto (U-18 MNT Asst.), and Rusty Johnson (Santa Clara University GK coach) are on hand to train and evaluate the players for future consideration in Showcase Select games and Youth National team inclusion.
Held monthly, Coach Perez invites players in to train them in very tactical and technical sessions dedicated to improving their vision, ball handling and understanding of the game so they can succeed at the next level of soccer. Each Academy club has taken a turn in hosting the MTC’s and the Directors and Academy coaches of each host club are invited in to work the session with Coach Perez’s staff so they can take what they learn and incorporate it into their individual team trainings.
Perez and his staff encourage the blending of younger players (94 and 93’s) into the MTC trainings with the older Academy players (92 and 91’s) so they can work with bigger and more physical players at an earlier age. This, Coach Perez believes is critical to development and player promotion within the Academy system. Recently, an earlier 2 hour session was put in place by Coach Perez for players in the age groups of all Academy clubs from the 95,96,97 and 98 age groups so that they can be identified for the U-14 and U-15 MNT player pools.
“The chance to get invited to these select trainings with Coach Perez, Mora and Yamo and play with the best players in the Academy once a month is an incredible opportunity, said Dallas Jaye (GK –Mustang Academy U-18) who attended his fourth MTC.
“I have a lot of respect for these guys when I go against them because I know we’re all picked to be here for a reason and we all have the same goals. Our jobs here are to make each other better and we all take it seriously” Perez, regularly holds MTC’s as well in Washington State for Washington Premier and Crossfire Academy as well as in the Southwest Division with the Los Angeles and San Diego area based teams. On the road constantly providing training and leadership for the Academy program, he recently was the lead coach and trainer at a symposium for Academy coaches at the Home Depot Center attended by Coach Bob Bradley of the US MNT.
