Fresno State Bulldog earns regional soccer notice

Fresno State women’s soccer player Vanessa Gonzalez was named to the U.S. Under-20 Regional team and will have her name forwarded to the U-20 national team staff, according to the university.
As a freshman this past season, the former Clovis High standout and Bee Girls High School Soccer Player of the Year anchored a Bulldogs defense that recorded five shutouts. She earned an assist against Nevada on Oct. 18.
"She deserves opportunities like the regional selection to further showcase her capabilities," coach Brian Zwaschka said in a news release. "I am excited to see her develop and get more opportunities like this."

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State women’s soccer player Vanessa Gonzalez was named to the Under-20 Regional team. She was in a pool of over 125 girls and made the team.
"Vanessa is certainly an up and coming talent," said head coach Brian Zwaschka. "She deserves opportunities like the regional selection to further showcase her capabilities. She is young, but gained loads of invaluable experience this season. At this rate she will be a fixture for the Bulldogs for three more years, which is great to look forward to. She learns quickly and is gaining consistency, and I have no doubt she’ll continue to excel. She is mature enough and dedicated enough to understand that our high demands and extensive work on details will serve the team and pay off for her personally. I am excited to see her develop and get more opportunities like this."
Unfortunately, this year the U-20 team will not be able to compete this year. However, Gonzalez and the other player’s names will be submitted to the U-20 National team coaching staff.
As a freshman this last season, Gonzalez anchored the Bulldog defense that recorded five shutouts. She earned an assist against Nevada on Oct. 18. She recorded eight shots with four on goal during her freshman campaign.
