Dr. Santesteban (pronounced “Santa-stay-bawn”), comes to Odyssey with a long coaching resume which includes 18 years as an intercollegiate coach at the NCAA D-1, NJCAA, and LAI levels. For 11 of those years, he served simultaneously as a Collegiate Athletic Director and most recently helped guide the University of the Virgin Islands from the LAI to the NAIA.
From 2012 to 2014, Dave served as a Technical Advisor for US Soccer where his duties included the assistant coach responsibilities for the U14 & U15 Youth National Teams under coach Hugo Perez. This experience also allowed him to observe several national team camps of the U17’s, U20’s, and MNT. He was also responsible for all scouting and US Development Academy Clubs in the Frontier Division of the USSDA.
Dave holds a USSF National “A” coaching license and is among the first 20 coaches in the US to successfully complete the new USSF “Technical Director’s” license, which is the highest license available in America.
Dave’s educational background includes a Ph.D. in Sports Administration from the Univ. of New Mexico. In addition, he holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Physical Education from Fresno State. He has also had the great fortune to study professional youth development for an advanced field study during his Doctoral studies at CA Osasuna of La Liga in Pamplona, Spain for the entire spring of 97. He has also spent numerous occasions studying and learning the youth development programs of Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Real Sporting de Gijon, TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, SC Freiburg, CSD Municipal, Monterrey Rayados, FC Dallas and the Houston Dynamo.
Dave was a graduate of Hoover HS (87) and went on to play soccer at Fresno City College and Fresno State. He also played locally for Fresno Oro and Fresno International. He left Fresno for USL experience with Santa Cruz Surf and the San Francisco Bay Diablos (before the MLS). He also was a member of the US Open Cup Champion San Jose Oaks.
